Curves, arcs, circles, spirals: these are the geometric forms that make up the architecture of nature. When we practice tai chi we try to simulate the forms in nature. This means that we move gracefully without locking out the joints. To do this we must first open the joints and we can do this by creating arcs and curves in our arms and legs. That’s a good beginning. Overtime though as we become proficient in the forms we begin to explore the spirals in the forms. Exploring the arcs, curves and spirals in the forms leads us to feeling the energy. Once we sense and feel this innate energy we might begin to gather it in and concentrate it in the area around the navel – the dian tian. As we continue this process of gathering and accumulating there comes a point where there will almost be a spontaneous release. But before this happens we might begin to have a sense of how to direct our energy to other parts of the body that may be depleted or have a need for more energy. All this is very difficult so we begin by just finding the circularity in all the forms. Circularity is all around us. I took a walk around the area where I live and looked for this circularity and this is what I found.
